| Belmont, built on the banks of the Dwars River in 1890, was a double-storey family residence for Rev George Heberden who had moved from England to Ceres for health reasons. However, he sadly died soon after the house was completed, and it was sold and his widow and children returned to England. The new owner converted it into the Belmont Sanatorium, with ten rooms. Each room had its own fireplace, there were hot and cold baths, and two tennis courts in the grounds. It was managed by the Ceres district surgeon Dr Gustav Zahn and became internationally known as a health resort. In 1898 it was bought by Sir James Logan of Matjiesfontein, who turned it into the Belmont Private Hotel. It changed hands a few times and was a family home again from the 1920s to the 1940s. The last owners were the Conradies (two generations), who had bought the hotel in 1955 and operated it for 50 years. They retired in 2005 and the hotel closed down. The building was demolished in 2007 for a townhouse development which did not materialise. Submitted by Lila Komnick – extracted from FB Ceres van Gister en Eergister. |
