Click to view map Coordinates: | The hotel was first established in 1864 by John Dyason who ran it until his death in 1878 after which his wife continued the business until 1881. At this time it was sold a Mrs Eksteen, who named it the "Exteen Hotel". Fours later it was sold again and renamed the "Prince Albert Hotel" and it continued to be run as such for the next 34 years. In 1919 the name changed to "The National Hotel" after it was acquired by Mr L. Levenson. In 1947 it changed ownership again but the name remained unchanged until 1952 when the rondavel garden rooms were built and it became known as the "Swartberg Hotel". The building was declared a National Monument in 1989. Now a Provincial Heritage Site. (Gerald Humphrey, April 2018) |
