This building replaced the Norwich Union Building as headquarters which had become inadequate for the needs of the growing Norwich Union Insurance Company company, one of the first of those to acquire land and to built on the reclaimed land of the Foreshore Scheme. Recognition was given to this lead by the then Governor-General, Dr EG Jansen, by his opening of the project.
