The Farm Klipfontein No. 6, in the District of Boksburg, Ward North, Province of the Transvaal, on which the Barlett Agricultural Holdings were laid out, was originally granted to D. Erasmus by Deed of Grant dated 5 January 1863.

In December 1925, the northern-most portion of the Farm, comprising '760 Morgen 302 Square Roods' in extent, and henceforth known as Portion 147 (EE) of the Farm Klipfontein No. 6, was surveyed, with the Diagram framed from the survey in March 1936.[1]

Portion 147 (EE) of the Farm Klipfontein No. 6 was at that stage bounded by the Farm Witkoppie No. 7 to the north, the Farm Driefontein No. 1 to the west, the Farm Kleinfontein No. 2 to the east, and the Remaining Extent of the Farm Klipfontein No. 6 to the south.

In November 1936, a portion of Portion 147 (EE) of the Farm, to be known as Portion 175 of the Farm Klipfontein No. 6, was surveyed by the Land Surveyor B. van Zijl as part of the proposed establishment of Barlett Agricultural Holdings.[2]

Portion 175 of the Farm Klipfontein No. 6 was subdivided into 44 holdings and surveyed by the Land Surveyors H. Auret Pritchard and B. van Zijl. The Diagram framed from the survey described large rectangular plots, the majority of which measured 370 x 700 Cape Feet each with a resultant site area of three Morgen.[3]

The General Plan [4] of the Township was examined and passed by the Surveyor General in 1937, with the land so surveyed described as Bartlett Agricultural Holdings, in extent 137 7673 Morgen. This was 51 years after Boksburg was laid-out in 1886, and 34 years after Boksburg attained municipal status in 1903. [5]

The Bartlett Agricultural Holdings were named after Major Edwin (‘Ted’) Bartlett (b. 1867 – d. 27 May 1943). He was the applicant with respect to the establishment of Bartlett Agricultural Holdings.[6]

Born in New Zealand, Bartlett served with the British Forces in the Second Anglo-Boer War, and settled in South Africa where he farmed near Elandsfontein after the end of hostilities in 1902. He later served in the South African Forces during the First World War.

He was laid to rest in the old Boksburg Cemetery in 1943. Bartlett’s Estate Papers list his two predeceased wives as Margaret McGregor Bartlett (born Grant) and Isabel Bartlett. [7]
