Gereformeerde Kerk
Stellenbosch, Western Cape

Date:1970
Type:Gereformeerde Kerk - Church
Status:Extant

In April 1967 the Reformed church of Stellenbosch ceded from Bellville from which they were granted a site which had a small shed. At first the new congregation considered restoring the shed, however services were held in the Hofmeyr Hall. Generous donations from the membership and especially that of Mrs Cora Hamersma enabled the congregation to build their own church.

During the excavations it was found that where the building was to be erected was located on the pebble-wash of the Eerste River, which had, in time, changed course. The building was inaugurated on 17 October 1970. It comprises a two-partite A-framed structure with a restrained tower. The interior comprises a rectilinear auditorium with a high vault and timber pews for 350 church-goers. There is also a gallery in which is housed an electronic organ. In time a hall, consistory, mothers' room, paving and perimeter wall were all added.
