In die ou dae was dit die markplein, en kerkgangers van buite kon hul kar-en-perde hier uitspan, of die naweek in "tuishuise" regs oorbly This square is part of the history of Swellendam. In days gone by it was the market square where people from the outlying district could outspan their horses and carts when attending Church or spending a week-end in their townhouses nearby.
