Inscription of bronze plaque mounted on horizontal face of plinth:

THIS MONUMENT
WAS ERECTED IN 1953 BY THE 1820 MEMORIAL
SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA AND
WAS UNVEILED BY NOEL HAMISH GILFILLAN
NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THAT ASSOCIATION.
DESIGNED BY IVAN MITFORD-BARBERTON, A.R.C.A.
IT REPLACED AND PERPETUATES A MEMORIAL TO
THE BRITISH SETTLERS OF 1820 WHICH WAS
ERECTED HERE IN THEIR HONOUR A CENTURY
AFTER THEIR LANDING.

An additional inscription on the memorial was recorded on a prepared facing panel - in large V-cut letters - on the east face of the granite plinth:

TO THE

BRITISH SETTLERS

OF

1820

TO WHOM

SOUTH AFRICA

OWES SO MUCH

The large granite beam spanning between the two granite posts has the date 1820 recorded in large v-cut letters on both the east and the west faces.

This replaced the First Memorial.
