| Cumming-George 1933 ON AN EXCELLENT site in Parktown, Johannesburg, "Ridge Heights" has been built to overlook one of the finest views in the district. The kopje on top of which the house stands, falls steeply away to the north and the far blue Magaliesberg. The house is approached from the south, through wrought iron gates to the flagged driveway that sweeps in a leisurely curve to the wide porte cochere. To the north, a fine lawn spreads to the edge of the kopje, and on this side also has been constructed an open oval swimming pool in the slope of the kopje. The house is worthy of so perfect a setting. In spirit it is Spanish. Its walls are covered with rough stucco, warm buff in colour, with foundations of mountain stone. The low pitched roof is covered with red Cordova tiles. The plan shows a long octagonal hall panelled in quartered sheets of walnut. To the right, a cloak room and the lounge, a pleasant room with delicate green walls. The fireplace in a big recess, is of Warm Baths stone. North of the hall double doors lead on to the great stoep, and to the left is the door to the oval dining room. From the stair hall the walnut panelled stairway leads up to a long landing from which four bedrooms are entered, three bathrooms, and a large sleeping porch. The bathroom walls are tiled in pastel shades with a dull glazed finish. The extremely high foundations allow of garages for three cars, a room for central heating plant and big store to be built under the house at one end.
