Click to view large map Coordinates: | Commendation Citation The Golf Club House at Steyn City is a surprise in many ways, all of which work against the preconceptions of what such golf club houses should be all about. One of the principles of the Steyn City development is that nature should dominate and, by extension, that nature should be 'healed' where it has been abused. This building has been placed on a site that was previously an abandoned quarry. The architects tried their utmost to make it as inconspicuous as possible. As it is a relatively large building for its context, the bulk of it has been placed against the backdrop of a low hill.This has helped to lessen its impact. The building does not rise above the horizon line of the hill, which assists in it fitting into the site. In keeping with the use of nature as a source of inspiration, the building mass was disaggregated into four boulder-like forms. The 'cracks and fissures' between these forms have been used for the main entrance and other circulatory purposes, while the roofs have all been planted. When viewed from many vantage points, it would seem as if the club house has completely merged with the landscape. The public areas on the ground floor relate superbly to the view onto the greens. Much thought and design care must have gone into making this relationship work so well. As can be expected from buildings of this calibre and design intent, it does not only pay lip service to sustainability, but much has also been done to implement the most appropriate systems. The building's tectonic resolution, attention to detail and craftsmanship is truly admirable.The design and environmental principles developed for it set a good example to follow and to learn from.
