HEIDELBERG HERITAGE ASSOCIATION
St Ninian's Anglican Church
The Church was built in 1882. Rev. Frank
Dowling was appointed as the first rector of
Heidelberg, on the 1st January 1888 and he
dedicated the church, in the name of "St. Ninian",
on the 9th of November 1890. All the pews and
furniture are original (except the pulpit) and were
imported from England. The rectory was built for
Rev. H.J. Organ in 1896. The hall was completed in
1903 and was used as a lecture room for the
Heidelberg Teachers Training College.
A brass plaque honours the memory of Mayor John
Vallintin who died during the 2nd Anglo-Boer War
and a second plaque to Edith Goodwin who was
a stalwart of the Church and helped nurse the
wounded during the war. The church was
known as the "Soldiers Church" as it
reminded the British Soldiers of home.
