| The Mthatha Police complex is situated where the Cape Mounted Riflemen (CMR) had their Headquarters in Mthatha, on a peninsular of land bounded by the Mthatha River. In 1914 the CMR was incorporated into the South African Mounted Riflemen (SAMR). The SAMR was disbanded in the late 1920's and the site subsequently became the Police Headquarters for the Police in the Transkei. The site is currently known as the SAPS Mthatha Police Complex. The scanned drawing of the New Magazine was extracted from a working drawing describing various buildings, which were either existing or to be constructed to house the SAMR, shortly after the commencement of the First World War. The original working drawing was titled: S.A.M.R. Barracks – Umtata - Transkei (Cape Province). Building No. 8797: Sheet No. 5. The drawing recorded the following structures: Old NCOs' Quarters, (Privates or) Rifleman's Quarters, Saddler's shop, Guard Room, (New) Magazine, Ablutions and Shower Sheds, (Privates') Closets (&) Latrines etc. The originator of the working drawing was recorded as follows: PWD (Public Works Department), King William’s Town, 13.12.1915 DPW Archive Plan No.: T4040/76/20 Submitted by William MARTINSON |
