See more photographs The foundation stone commemorates its laying by Mrs C Newberry, wife of the owner of Leeuw River Mills, Charles Newberry, on 1892 06 11. The five-storeyed structure built of local Free-State sandstone blocks housed the machinery below, and stored the wheat and ground flour above. All steel components including the steel-plate mill-race, cast-iron pillars and water-wheel were manufactured in Scotland and transported overland by ox-wagon. The Leeuw River Mill supplied wheat flour to the diamond mines of Kimberley at the time. In 2002 the mill was kept operational by the then owner Piet le Roux by means of a turbine, the design being done and built by ERF Turner and Co of Ipswich, UK. References: Staples, Chester O. 2006.
