The building was designed to commemorate the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War in 1899. It was built in the grounds of the cemetery for interned women and children. The project received International recognition: Selected as part of the South African exhibition of the 2005 Sao Paulo International Architecture Biennale Exhibition.
