IN SEARCH OF THE VERNACULAR - A RAILWAY CARRIAGE OR A HOTDOG

House Lofstedt is situated on a linear site in one of the older suburbs of Johannesburg.

The house explores the reinterpretation of the Transvaal vernacular house using corrugated iron and brick, within the confines of a linear plan.

A corrugated iron barrel vault roof is sandwiched between two articulated parallel walls, establishing a strong linear form. Detached gables define the hierarchy of the house.

The free flowing plan, reminiscent of a railway carriage is penetrated with cross-axes, which connect the inside spaces to the external garden and courtyard.
