ARTICULATED BRICKS
Economic and Management Sciences Building, University of Pretoria 1991
This modern rose window straddles a concrete floor slab and belies its sacred looks — its top half lights a waiting area, its bottom half a public toilet. The top half is glazed, with three opening sections per rose quarter window. The bottom half is fitted with fixed wire mesh panes for permanent ventilation.
The size of the window panes is 340 mm square, a size which is taken up in the two-tone imperial-sized brick cross as one-and-a-half bricks horizontally and four courses vertically, without having to cut any bricks. The brick outer skin is articulated in steps of 50 to 230 mm.
All masonry is solid, every course reinforced with galvanized wire ties, and a liquid rubber additive was added to the class 1 (10 MPa) mortar to improve adhesion.
Windows are of standard steel cottage sections. Panes (glass and wire mesh) are set in putty.

ARTIKULEERDE STENE
