CLAY PIPE HANDRAIL Mangosuthu Technikon, Umlazi, Kwazulu 1983 Barrie Biermann wrote about this building complex as "an apotheosis of brick and tile". One might add "clay pipe", for these were used innovatively and extensively as column cladding, sunscreens, planter boxes and handrails. Paul Custers, who worked on the building, confesses that he was doubtful whether he would repeat this detail. But it certainly looks good and has stood up remarkably well over the years. The problems encountered are differential movement between clay and concrete infill or backing, causing some pipes to crack, and spalling due to corrosion of metal parts. The building received an award of merit. Argitek Paul Custers, wat op die gebou gewerk het, sê hy twyfel of hy weer dié detail sal herhaal. Maar dit lyk sekerlik goed en het verbasend goed oor die jare gehou. Probleme wat ondervind is is differensiële beweging tussen klei en beton invulling, en afdop weens korrosie van metaaldele. Die gebou het 'n merietetoekenning gekry.
