Also sometimes spelt LE NOIR. A Roman Catholic priest, builder and designer, Lenoir was brought out to South Africa in 1876 by Bishop JOLIVET who had been a colleague of his in the Diocese of Liverpool, England, in the early 1870s. Jolivet brought Lenoir in since Lenoir had built Jolivet the parish church of the Holy Cross in Liverpool to designs chosen by Jolivet and supplied by AW PUGIN. At the time of Jolivet's arrival in South Africa (1875) there were apparently three Catholic churches in his diocese (see JOLIVET). Lenoir may have been involved in the design of several churches but as yet not much appears to have been recorded of his work. He seems to have died in South Africa.
