KLINKHAMER, Jacob Frederik

Born: 1854
Died: 1928

Architect

Never came to South Africa. He was born and educated in Amsterdam in the Netherlands where he trained as an architect and civil engineer at the Technische Hogeschool at Delft. He became Professor of Architecture and Building Construction at Delft in 1899/1900. Klinkhamer designed several major semi-Industrial buildings, among which was the Netherlands Railway's Administration Building, Utrecht, and also several residences in the Netherlands. His significance for South Africa lies in the fact that he was commissioned in 1894 to design Park Station, the first station in Johannesburg, for the NZASM. Although the designs were completed, only a platform, its roof and a few (five) buildings were erected (1895-1897).
