KIRBY, Henry Ernest

Born: fl. 1886
Died: 1927

Architect

No work has yet been found ascribed to Kirby in South Africa. He came to the country about 1895 having been articled in England to Phene Spiers from October 1886 for four years; Kirby remained in Spiers's office as an assistant until July 1892. He then worked in Bond Street in London from 1892 until 1894 in Wallace and of CH Driver. He travelled to Normandy in 1892 on a six-week sketching tour. By 1895 he was in Johannesburg from where he applied and was accepted for Associate membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects in that year. He seems to have returned to England in about 1899 since he was an Institute Medallist (RIBA) in 1899 and his address in 1907 was in Hastings. At some point he returned to South Africa since in 1927 he had registered with the Institute of South African Architects from which he resigned in 1940, having practised until then as an architect in South Africa.
