Also known as BOWERS-JANION
Probably an Englishman, J Bowers Janion worked in Grahamstown in the 1860s and acted among other things as an agent. By 1873 he was in Bloemfontein where his wife opened a small school and he advertised as a 'Broker, Accountant, Architect, House, Land, Law, Estate forwarding and commission agent' able to make 'plans, specifications and estimates ... for the erection of churches, public buildings, stores' (Schoeman 1982:51, 52). The Lutheran Church in Bloemfontein (c1875) is the only building currently ascribed to him. Janion did not remain long in Bloemfontein. By the end of the 1870s he was recorded working in both East London and King William's Town. By 1880 he was in Natal and advertised in the press as someone who could bring buildings up to a modern standard in South Africa without increasing the cost since he had recently returned from England with all the latest knowledge. While in Natal he was living in Durban (1889) and was still living in Natal in 1894 when he entered the competition for the Colonial Offices in Pietermaritzburg and was found to be practising without an architect's licence.
