Hermer was born in Volksrust, Transvaal and studied architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1933, graduating in 1937. He commenced independent practice in 1939 but on the outbreak of the Second World War he enlisted and served in East Africa and in the Middle East. He recommenced practice in Johannesburg after the war. In 1943 he joined R GREEN in partnership (cf GREEN & HERMER), the partnership being dissolved in 1946. In 1954 he transferred his membership to Orange Free State Provincial Institute of Architects (OFSPIA) now FSIA but at some point returned to practice in Johannesburg.

In 1969 he was a principal in the firm MANFRED HERMER & GROSSKOPF ARCHITECTS.

He retired to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. (Information supplied by Bruce Butler who's father was a good friend of Hermer and had also retired to Victoria.)
