He was born in Pietermaritzburg and educated at Hilton College. It is not certain where he trained but by 1927 he was a practising member of the Surveyors' Institute of South Africa, working in Durban. He joined CH STOTT (cf. STOTT, SULLIVAN & BARBOUR) who had offices in Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Stanger. MCQS; ISAA 1927.
