Lesley Townsend (nee Freedman) born in Cape Town. She lived in Canada and Israel as a child. She finished schooling in Cape Town and studied architecture at the University of Cape Town completed in 1970. Her thesis design was set in Bokaap. She worked for Cape Town City Council from 1971 to 1976 with a break of a year during which travelled in Europe and worked in London. In Cape Town worked on housing and as architect in charge of the restoration of the Malay Quarter Monument from November 1972 to February 1976.

She is married to architect Stephen TOWNSEND.
