MANETSI, Aubrey Joseph

Born: 1943
Died: 1994

Autodidact township architect

Place of birth not recorded but probably South Africa. He matriculated from the Morris Isaacson School in Jabavu, Soweto. As a "boy genius" he dreamt of becoming an architect but his ambitions were thwarted by the then apartheid regime since, although with repeated efforts from 1967 until 1970, he failed to obtain ministerial approval for entry to the University of the Witwatersrand School of Architecture. Nevertheless, he opened his own practice as a "township architect" at 1707 Dobsonville, Soweto. He had been supported in his endeavours by Jack HERSON, to whom he paid tribute for the recognition he had given him. By his own account he had published a book Pace—My Home [no copy has been traced to date]. He produced high-quality working drawings displing the emergence of a modern regional style as evidenced by the only drawing known to have survived him [Jack HERSON as related to Clive CHIPKIN (Chipkin 2008:243)].
