Hamlin, probably born in South Africa, was apprenticed to WG MOFFAT in Durban from 1 April 1929 but after a year went to London to study at the Architectural Association where he completed the five-year course, graduating with Honours in 1934. While in London he worked in the offices of Gotch & Saunders and PJ Westwood & Sons, F/ARIBA, travelling to most of the European countries including Hungary and 'Slovakia' in his leave. In 1935 he returned to Durban, practising in Durban with offices in Alcock House, West Street; he won the $ 950 house category in the Natal Daily News Ideal Homes competition 1937/1938. HERBERT notes Hamlin as among those producing 'modern work of quality' with his Natal Organic Industries Building, Durban, which he notes as 'one of the first modern buildings in Natal to be published' (Herbert 1975:226). The Second World War and active service interrupted Hamlin's career which he resumed in Durban after the war. In 1959 he was in partnership with I PARK-ROSS (cf HAMLIN & PARK-ROSS).
