An architect who worked mainly in the Cape, Hall was probably born in Britain where he was apprenticed to and later assisted Eustace Corrie Frere, ARIBA, in London from 1890 to 1896. He was 'compelled to come to South Africa for his health' (LRIBA nom papers 1911), arriving in the Cape in 1897. He first worked as an assistant in H BAKER's office in Cape Town before going to work as an assistant in J PARKER's office in Cape Town. Around 1906 he spent eighteen months as chief architectural assistant with Cape Town Corporation, studying quantity surveying with EW Fricker of London and Cape Town. Hall lived in Claremont in Cape Town from his arrival in 1897 to his departure for Oudtshoorn in 1908. He lived and practised in Oudtshoorn as an architect and quantity surveyor on his own account from 1908 to 1920 and was appointed architect to the Oudtshoorn School Board. In 1910 Hall won the competition for the Dutch Reformed Church in Calitzdorp but 'owing to the dissatisfaction expressed by the congregation' (Restorica Apr 1983:35) the job went to the second prizewinner, Wynand LOUW. Watson returned to Claremont in 1920. At some point he was architect to the Rugby Union for a period of four years during which time he built stands at Newlands Rugby Grounds. He died in Cape Town. A note in his biographical file in the RIBA states he did 'nothing outstanding but specialised in churches and schools.'
