Sculptor


Fanie Eloff was the grandson of President Paul Kruger. Henk PIERNEEF and Gerard MOERDYK were Fanie’s schoolfellows at the old Staatsmodelskool in Pretoria. In 1908 he decided to further his studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris. He decided to become a sculptor after seeing the work of Auguste Rodin, and spent the greater part of his creative life in Paris. With the invasion of Paris during WW2 he had to flee and returned to South Africa. In 1945 the SA Academy of Science and Art awarded him with the Medal of Honour for his art.
