Frank was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia), then moved to Witbank at the age of one. He lived in Johannesburg from 1961 until 1970 when he moved to Pretoria.
In 1973 his early career was as a draughtsman at Index Design, an interior design firm, where his chief duties were doing the layouts and details for banks and restaurants. In 1983 he joined BURG DOHERTY BRYANT and PARTNERS as one of the first CAD technologists in South Africa, draughting on Calcomp, a mainframe-run program. His first major CAD project was the draughting of the new Reserve Bank Head Office in Pretoria. His last CAD-based project, done with Adel Bekker, was the draughting of The Palace Hotel at the Lost City.
In 1993 he joined Vector Solutions, the local suppliers of Calcomp. The company had then recently become local suppliers of a new software package, Command 5000, a CAD program with an underlying database. There he learnt the basics of databases. He was mainly involved with installations, training and maintenance of Command 5000. The company also had a software package branded as Remedy, a help-desk and workflow application that integrated to Command 5000, operations that Frank became involved as well. He was appointed General Manager for PC based applications in the company.
In 1998 Frank joined Remedy International as Sales Manager for Sub Saharan Africa. While their head office was located in San Francisco, USA, he worked under their UK office. In 2001 Remedy merged with another software house and Frank was made redundant and so found himself in early retirement.
Prof Roger Fisher at the University of Pretoria, Department of Architecture, had charge of documents which Joanna Walker had lodged of the South African Biographical Dictionary of Architects. He approached Frank requesting him to build an Access database to store the information. He inquired of Frank as to the possibility of making the data available to a wider audience. Frank designed and built a database in MySQL, imported the data from the Access database and learnt HTML and PHP to enable him to create artefacts.co.za .
Frank now lives in Swellendam, Western Cape, South Africa where he spends most of his time working on the website. |
