Born in Haarlemmermeer, North-Holland, the Netherlands. He worked, on his arrival in South Africa in 1936, in Queenstown. In 1937 he established himself as a contractor in Pretoria. He was member of the Master Builders Association there. He was responsible for many contracts for the Transvaal Provincial Administration as well as the Department of Public Works, building projects across the then Transvaal. He also undertook many private developments including the buildings for his own company, blocks of flats and office buildings.
