Godfrey was born in London where he probably trained. It is not yet known when he came to South Africa. He was appointed to the post of 1st grade draughtsman in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, Orange River Colony in 1902 and became acting chief architect of the PWD, Orange River Colony in 1907 on the death of GWH GORDON in December 1906. When he applied for Licentiate membership of the RIBA in 1912 he was living in Pretoria. In the same year he moved to the PWD in Pietermaritzburg, working as a 1st grade draughtsman. A few years later (n.d.) he returned to the Transvaal. He had married (n.d.) in Kroonstad and was latterly living in Ermelo, dying in hospital in Pretoria. He was present at the death of William Henry GIBSON in Pretoria in February 1916 and was witness to his death certificate. LRIBA, Pretoria 1912.
