Born in Brandfort, Orange Free State. He started his studies in architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand, then changed to art. He became a lecturer in Fine Art at the University of the Witwatersrand and later a full-time sculptor. Was a teacher at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Architecture in 1933.
He was a noted artist for the embellishment of buildings and did many bas relief panels for banks, building societies etc.
He married Johanna Francina Smuts (b. 1911) in Johannesburg on 8 December 1934, but they later divorced. Their marriage certificate gave his occupation as 'sculptor'. He died tragically by suicide at Swalkerskraal, district Knysna.
