NESS, GeorgeBorn: 1858
George Ness was a metal worker who did work for Herbert BAKER in an engineer's workshop at the docks in Cape Town where they executed to Baker's designs all the brass and metal work which were such a feature of the heavy doors and shutters. Ness was particularly talented: ‘He made everything of metal from the needful things such as hinges, handles and fasteners, even nails – for Rhodes would have nothing ready-made or imported in his buildings – to richer wrought metalwork and cast bronzes.
