Arrived in Pretoria in 1893 as a NZASM engineer. After the end of the Anglo-Boer War in 1902 he set up an engineering and plumbing enterprise, first in Schubert Street, later in Church Street. He served as a member of the Pretoria Municipal Representatives and later as a Member of the Transvaal Provincial Council, in both instances representing Pretoria-West. Lievaart was married to Anna Maria van Heerde (1875-1965). Their graves, plus those of two of their children, are in the Rebecca Street Cemetery, Pretoria West.
