John Gibbs was born in the Transvaal, a son of the architect AH GIBBS. When he registered with the Institute of South African Architects in 1927 his address was c/o DM SINCLAIR. At one point he was resident in South West Africa (Namibia) where he bought a plot of land in Windhoek. ISAA 1927.
