(A.R.I.B.A., M.I.A.)

Roman Soltynski registered as an architect in South Africa in 1949, having qualified in Warsaw. He was born in 1907 in Warsaw and in 1943 published a book ‘Glimpses of Polish Architecture’. The foreword to the book was written by Professor William HOLFORD, a South African architect and town planner who practised in the United Kingdom and was Professor of Civic design at Liverpool University at the time (later Lord Holford). This would suggest that Soltynski already had some standing as an architect in Britain.

He is indicated as being a lecturer at the UCT School of Architecture from 1960-1963 and again as a senior lecturer from 1966-1970. In the period when he was first employed there, Macick MISZEWSKI, a fellow Polish architect, was also employed as a junior lecturer in the department. The two had been collaborating earlier when they entered the competition for the design of a city hall and civic square for Toronto in 1958. They were placed among the finalists.
