Born in Johannesburg he studied art at the Witwatersrand Technical College from 1953 to 1956. He became an art teacher filling posts in Johannesburg and, for a brief spell, in England. In 1963 he gained a BA degree in Fine Arts and spent some years teaching and lecturing at the Port Elizabeth Technical College.
In 1983 he gained a Masters Diploma in Technology in Fine Art at the Port Elizabeth Technikon, specialising in stained glass. This was followed by an MA from Rhodes University in 1986, with painting and stained glass as his major subjects.
While creating his own designs much of his work is devoted to the preservation of valuable and historic windows.
In 1994 he received the Simon van der Stell Foundation's Citation in recognition of his work in the field of stained glass in South Africa.
