Born in Johannesburg and baptised Catherine Johanna Maria de Beer. She studied fine arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1950 she joined her mother in Kenya where she married and spent five years. She returned to Johannesburg in 1955 and in 1958 married again becoming Joan Bludgen.
In 1965 she was approached by Dr Mario Samassa to join the Murano Glass Works as the company artist where she did 'several hundred' designs for mosaics and stained glass windows.
Joan held many exhibitions of her paintings in Johannesburg, mostly of portraits and landscapes. She has also executed a considerable number of architectural drawings, has illustrated several maps, and has designed motifs and subjects for a South African company weaving decorative wall tapestries.
