Educated at St Anne's DSG, Hilton. Trained at Durban School of Art and Royal College of Art, London. After completion of her studies [1925] she married Dr Gifford-Gayton who died shortly afterwards as a result of war injuries. She travelled in Europe before returning to South Africa to take up a position at the Ceramic Studio in 1928. Employed as designer/decorator. Married Francois van Schalkwyk in 1932. Later taught art at St Mary's DSG, Pretoria
