| | DE SMIDT, Adam GBorn:
Engineer |
Son of the distinguished De Smidt family, his father a Member of the Cape Parliament. He was brother-in-law to Thomas BAIN through the marriage of his sister Johanna Hermina, and they co-operated on many road-building projects. He, in the 1860s, became local District Engineer in Knysna. It is related that the daunting task of linking George to Knysna through the Outeniqua Mountains led to heated argument as to the alignment of the road and that, through this difference of opinion, they, thereafter, never spoke again! All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
