Was born in Scotland where he studied engineering at the University of Glasgow, graduating with a masters degree in engineering in November 1876. He worked for various firms in Scotland as a surveyor and draughtsman before leaving for London where he worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor for the Rio Tinto Co Ltd until 1888. He left for South Africa, arriving in 1889, and was employed in the Borough Engineer's office in Kimberley. He became ill, and in 1889 applied for the post of City Engineer and Surveyor, Johannesburg. Although unsuccessful, he moved to Johannesburg anyway. Nothing is yet known of his career after this.
