Born at Reitz in the Orange Free State, son of A Abramowitz. Educated at St Andrews, Bloemfontein and graduated with a BSc (Eng) from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1947. On graduating he joined ELGIN STRUCTURES as assistant engineer. In February of 1954 he joined Z KAMPEL as partner in the firm STEELCON STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING which changed to KAMPEL & AMBRAMOWITZ in 1956. In 1955 he married Helen Rabinowitz by whom he had two daughters. In 1967 he served as an associate member of the SA Prestressed Concrete Development Board.
