Born in The Netherlands, Dirksen qualified at the Hague Technical School in 1929 after which he worked for nine months with PM De Moet in s-Gravenhage. He left to work for the municipality of s-Gravenhage until 1924 when he came to South Africa. In 1937 he sat the special qualifying examination at the University of the Witwatersrand and became a member of the Institute of South African Architects in 1938. His name reflects in various partnerships, namely GLIKSMAN and DIRKSEN and GLICKSMAN, DIRKSEN and AMSON. In 1959 he is recorded as principal and partner in the practice DIRKSEN and BLUMENFELD of 317 Sanlam Building, Smith Street, Durban, Natal. In 1969 he is recorded as principal and partner of the practice DIRKSEN BLUMENFELD and KRAUSE of address 5th Floor, Protea Assurance Building, Smith Street Durban Natal. He resigned from the ISAA in 1977.
