| | DE WET, Raoul LindsayBorn: 1909 05 05 Died: ?ArchitectSACA: Reg No: 593 Year registered: 1935 |
Dipl. Arch (london)
ARIBA (1933); ISAA (1935).
Was born in South Africa and studied architecture in London at London University under Professor AE Richardson from 1927 graduating in 1932. During this period he toured Austria and spent six weeks in Paris. He applied for Associate membership of the RIBA in 1932 and was elected in 1933. Richardson noted on De Wet's forms: 'I have followed his career with great interest. He is an exceptional student'. De Wet returned to South Africa (n.d.) and registered with the ISAA in 1935. He appears to have become a partner in the firm of JONES & DAY in Cape Town around 1937. According to letters from both Piet van der Stel (MP) and from H Currey to JS CLELAND in 1937, one of De Wet's first jobs was for the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT and this had 'settled in his favour the question of his partnership with the other members of the firm' (Cleland Papers. HSRC). This was possibly the job of the Police Barracks and Police Station in Simon's Town. He went into partnership with RFR DAY (cf DAY & DE WET). De Wet was on active service during the Second World War. He is recorded both in 1959 and 1969 as being of the partnership. De Wet was at one point the President of the CPIA.
Useful information about the firm's work can be obtained from the donated collection of drawings and papers to the University of Cape Town Libraries (Day & De Wet Gift)
