| | DEVEREUX (brothers)Established: 1850
Architect |
The partnership between Edward Louis DEVEREUX and Lionel DEVEREUX, builders/architects in Pretoria from around 1850. They apparently settled first in Natal where they met Andries Pretorius who persuaded them to come and work in the Transvaal. 'Their first contract was to build a house for the Hero of Blood River, at Grootplaats, also known as Rust de Ouden, now covered by the waters of the Hartebeestpoort Dam' (Pretoriana no 87:44). They collaborated with W SKINNER (cf DEVEREUX & SKINNER) on the first Dutch Reformed Church on Market Square in Pretoria, later known as Church Square, in 1854. Although EL's death was recorded, nothing further is yet known of Lionel. (De Volkstem Oct 1904, De Ned Herv of Geref gemeente te Pretoria; Eeufees-Album 1954:25; Pretoriana no 87, Apr 1985:44-45)
Grootplaats (Rust de ouden) : House for 'the hero of Blood River', (Pretoriana no. 87:44-5) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon. |
