BArch 1979 (Pretoria) - Final design title: Head Office Olivetti (Africa).
Pedro ROOS was invited to participate in the 50 year Anniversary of the University of Pretoria School of Architecture Alumni Exhibition held at the Pretoria Art Gallery on 7-25 July 1993. The following is a short biography which was published in the catalogue at the time.
Pedro Roos was born in Johannesburg in 1954. He obtained his B.Arch (Pret) in 1979.
He is presently (1993) a partner in the firm GAPP ARCHITECTS & URBAN DESIGNERS. Roos participates in professional affairs (TIA) and architectural education: He has lectured, taught design, examined, inspected, assessed and advised in many institutions. He has written critiques for both popular and professional magazines. Within the firm, he has acted as Partner-in-charge for a wide variety of projects. These embrace the full spectrum of Urban Design, Low Income Housing, Educational-, Commercial- and Civic Buildings, through all stages of work.
He considers Glen GALLAGHER to be his mentor. For Pedro, his attainment of the degree Master in Urban Design at Wits in 1990 was a turning point. Crane, Norberg-Schulz, Alexander and Howe opened new ways of understanding: architecture as a response to process, context and complexity of life.
He is open ended in his search for design resolution, and is fascinated by artists who, in explorations of the conscious and unconscious worlds, challenge the normal conventions of reality, and render the macabre beautiful. The following artists inspire him: Witkin, Fassbinder, Lynch and Jarmusch, Eco, Calvino, Kundera, and alternative music. Of the architectural masters, LE CORBUSIER, Rossi, Braghieri, Barragan, the Neo-Rationalists, Iniguez & Ustarroz, Duany, Herrero, Plater-Zyberk and Nouvel inspire him.
Through time his perceptions of architecture have evolved. Having explored certain architectural "isms", he has come to realise that the more directly a work relates to a particular moment, the more restricted is its relevancy to time and place. External form has become the consequence of exploring the functions required of a building, the spaces suitable to accommodate them, and the modelling of mass and space with light. In detailed resolution, the "texture of place", the site, the environment, the sensual response of people, are very influential in his choice of materials and of colour. His increasing awareness of the importance of the play of light and shade, the counterpoint of mass and void, assist him in his search for a timelessness in architecture.
