CUNNINGHAM, William Dryden

Born: fl. 1905

Architect

Worked in Durban from 1905 to 1933. He taught building construction, drawing, mathematics and geometrical drawing in the evening at the Boys' Model School from 1905 under the auspices of the Natal Institute of Architects in answer to a demand for technical training. These classes were the forerunners for the development of the Natal Technical College which was founded in 1907. Cunningham was part of the original governing body. 'He was in many ways a difficult man, blunt and forthright in his manner. He was one of the few present ... who had practical experience of organising and teaching in evening technical classes in Durban' (Rees 1957:20). He remained in Durban until about 1933 when he left for Bulawayo, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). His career after about 1933 remains obscure at present.

ISAA 1927. (Hillebrand 1975, 1986; Rees 1957; UNSAL)
