Was articled to FM GLENNIE in Cape Town from February 1921 until February 1924. He also attended classes at the Michaelis School of Art, Cape Town. On completion of articles he was employed as an assistant in JONES & DRAIBY's office in Cape Town where he remained from 1924 until 1926, studying further at the University classes in Architecture. From 1927 until 1932 he worked as a builder and later noted gaining useful practical experience during these years. He was employed by HJ BROWNLEE from 1933 as a senior assistant and passed the RIBA examination in Cape Town in 1934. He remained with Brownlee until at least 1936 and set up practice on his own account in 1938. At a later date (n.d.) he was in partnership with MJ ADAMS (Jr), the partnership ending in 1951. In 1969 was in partnership with IGS CRUICKSHANK (cf CRUICKSHANK & CRUICKSHANK) at 801, Detroit House, 73 Castle Street, Cape Town (Was this his son?). He retired in 1977.
