Architect


Was the son of the Cape Town master builder John CRAN (AB&E Dec 1920:2). He worked for RM ROBERTSON in Cape Town for five years while studying at the School of Art in Cape Town under Mr WHALE. In 1898 he toured Britain for a few months before returning to South Africa where later in 1898 he was employed by the building contractor AB REID & CO in Cape Town as an architectural draughtsman and designer. He was responsible for alterations and renovations and possibly even designed several buildings in and around Cape Town including alterations to the interior of the Lodge de Goede Hoop. By 1910 he was employed by his father's firm of builders as a draughtsman. He became a Licentiate member of the RIBA in 1910, his papers being signed by Francis MASEY.
