Aziz Tayob was born in Polokwane. He graduated at the University of The Witwatersrand as the first black Architect in South Africa in 1969. AZIZ TAYOB ARCHITECTS INC. was established in 1970 in Pageview, Johannesburg. After the removal of Pageview by the Government, the practice has operated within the former Group Area for Asians in Laudium, Pretoria. The practice has established itself well despite limited opportunities. Aziz is married with 4 children and 10 grandchildren. The 2012 PIA Norman Eaton Award has been bestowed on Aziz Tayob. Below is the press release: "He has a career which spans over more than 40 years. He was the first South African [victim of segregation] to qualify as an architect in South Africa. He graduated from the School of Architecture, University of the Witwatersrand, in 1969. In 1970 he established the Aziz Tayob Partnership in Page View, Johannesburg. After the forceful removals of residents in Pageview by the previous government, the practice moved to Laudium, an area formally reserved for Indians in terms of the Group Areas Act. In 1972 he was presented with a Merit Award by the Transvaal Provisional Institute of Architects for House & Studio Tayob. The same honour is bestowed on him in 1982 by the South African Institute of Architects for House Dockrat. His work is not confined to the single buildings alone and in 1999 he receives the SA Architect Award for Outstanding Achievement in Urban Design for an Integrated Urban Design Framework for Marabastad. A year later he is also the recipient of the Nedbank Mail & Guardian Green Trust Urban Renewal Award. His list of awards includes public buildings where he is awarded in 2003 by the SA Institute of Architecture a National Award and by the Mpumalanga Institute of Architects a Regional Merit Award for the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature. The building is also nominated for a World Architecture Nomination, in Berlin. Much of his work was for the Muslim community and is broadly Islamic in character, combining both modern and traditional features. In 2003 he received the Pretoria Institute of Architecture Brickwork Award for the Darus Salaam Islamic Centre, located in Laudium. In 2005 he receives a further Merit award for his involvement in the design of the Ekurhuleni Municipal Chambers presented to him by the Gauteng Institute of Architects. Mr Tayob shares many of the criteria to be awarded with this medal. His architecture is honest, functional, thought provoking and innovative. His love and understanding of the brick as building element has made him a skilled master, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. His buildings are not objects that conform to trends, but are the result of creating spaces which are aimed at serving the needs of its occupants. The designs are tempered by the natural landscape, are ecologically friendly, and aspire to a high level of sustainability. He has maintained this excellence throughout his career. It is not only in his award winning designs that he has contributed to the architectural landscape. Mr. Tayob has been instrumental in the training of more than 35 architects and technicians from the disadvantaged sector. He has also been selected as external examiner at various tertiary institutions, ploughing back valuable expertise into the profession. He has further to that presented workshops to fellow architects, schooling them in the intricacies of using brick as a building material. It is above all his respect for humanity that runs central to his design philosophy, which makes him a worthy recipient of this award." At a SAIA ceremony on 2023 02 02 Aziz was awarded the SAIA Life Membership. PIA Nomination for SAIA Life Membership The PIA would like to nominate Aziz Tayob as a worthy candidate for SAIA Life Membership. He has a career which spans over more than 40 years.
