MARTIN, Marilyn

Art and Architecture Historian


Born in McGregor, Western Cape. She was conferred a Master's of Architecture degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in January 1981 with Dennis RADFORD as study leader, the study is titled "Phillip Dudgeon: His Life and Works."

Head of the South African National Gallery and thereafter the Director of Art Collections, Iziko Museums of Cape Town. Served on the National Arts Council and the Arts and Culture Trust. Curated numerous exhibitions of South African art around the world, including Brazil, Denmark, France, Mali and the USA. A panel member of the Dakar Biennale and the Daimler-Chrysler Awards. Honorary Research Associate at the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art. Awarded the Legion of Honour of the Republic of France as an Officer in 2002, and in 2013 the medal of the Fondation Alliance Francaise in Paris. A key figure in the transformation of the South African art world in the post-apartheid years.
